Our Camping Story

Our Camping journey started 14 years ago in a Nissan Navara 4X4 & a 2 man tent. Man how things have changed!! We upgraded to a roof top tent back in 2008, when we went on our first trip up to the Cape York Peninsula. We were kiddie free back then & converted the tray of the Navara into a canopy with custom shelving.

In 2010 our first son came along & we hired our first caravan from Geelong VIC. To put it lightly we absolutely loved it & were completely drawn in to the lifestyle! We spent two weeks travelling the Great Ocean Road and inland Victoria in a Jayco Sterling. This was the start of our dream, that one day we would be able to afford our very own caravan.

As the years rolled on two more kiddies came along, we upgraded the Navara to a Toyota Prado. We also upped the anti and our tent (which could now sleep 6) and purchased a Black Series Patron Camper Trailer. This was a game changer for us! We travelled back to Cape York again, and have been all over the East Coast of Australia in our Camper. Our Cape York trip was 5 years ago and our kids still talk about that holiday today. Our dream to own a caravan was always strong and we travelled to Caravan & Camping Shows every year, looking at different vans and dreaming about what we would want when we eventually purchased one.

In 2019 we took the plunge and purchased our Malibu Wildtracker, a caravan we had thought about for many years. We built this caravan to highlight everything we love about camping and to suit our family’s needs. Loads of changes were made to the original design as we wanted to get this caravan right. Our maiden voyage in our new caravan was down to Adelaide, ironically The Great Ocean Road and Melbourne, it sure was spectacular!

To be fair, we have been fortunate enough to travel overseas with our kids over the last 10 years too, but nothing beats the open road & Australian country side. Enjoying a camp fire in the cool night air & toasting marshmallows or having a beer under the stars in summer. Seeing those clear skies with millions of stars you just don’t see in towns or watching our children play freely, while discovering something new. It’s removing technology & the outside world & reconnecting with the people you love most.

We started Off the Grid back in June 2019 with only our camper trailer for hire and a dream of it becoming something much more.

Off The Grid Caravan Hire has been a true mix of our absolute passion for travel, camping and the incredible experience you share with your loved ones.

We’re all about creating an experience that we ourselves only dreamed about when we hired our first caravan. It’s giving every couple and family the opportunity to do the same.

We enjoy nothing more than seeing the look of excitement when adults and children alike come to pick up our caravans. We love hearing about their journeys & stories, nothing feels better to us.
